In Stitches - 2014

Personally, I don't do resolutions. I'm of the opinion that if there's something I need to change, stop, or start doing then there is no time like the present! No need to wait for a New Year. That said, I love a good challenge. I'm often thinking of ways I can challenge myself personally. I would never call myself a competitive person. I'm pretty useless with board games because of my lack of desire to compete; however, I love competing with myself and trying to achieve and beat my personal best. Constantly. I find it incredibly rewarding to beat my personal best or learn to do something more efficiently than I did before. I'm invigorated just thinking about it! So yeah, I love challenging myself.

Last year I challenged myself to dig deeper and learn how to sew things more properly. I wanted to "wing it" less and learn how to make garments that actually looked decent without that tell-tail "handmade" look. I took it to heart and I learned a lot. I didn't blog about my journey as much as I had planned to but I'm still learning all the time.

This year I have decided to take my newfound knowledge to the next level. I want to put it to good use and there's nothing so good as a challenge to motivate me. My challenge is to not buy any new clothes for either myself or the girls, but to sew things as we need/want them instead. And I love this idea. I love the idea of providing for my children with my own hands and putting my sewing machine to work! What if we need a new jacket? I'll have to sew it. Undies? Yup.

Let's do this.

In Stitches - 2014: A sewing challenge

Interested in playing along? You can cheat and buy new clothes if you want to, I won't tell ;) but I'd love to see what you sew for the year! I'll figure out how we can share our projects and link them up together. x

  1. Yay! I am currently battling my old overlocker and losing miserably. I'm up for the challenge, I'll have a cutie tiny thing to sew for soon - little people use less fabric - bonus!

  5. I would definitely be up for the challenge! I already sew a majority of my girls wardrobe and I sew all the boys shorts...but I really want to sew more of my own....plus they fit better and there's nothing better than wearing your own handmade clothes. So count me in!! :))

  6. I love the idea of giving yourself a challenge instead of resolutions (which never end up happening!). Love your challenge too! I wish I could sew. Definitely blog about your progress! You may already be following her, but I thought you might like Melissa's blog: www.melissaesplin.com. She's always showing awesome bits of clothing for herself and her daughter on her blog. :)

  7. don't know if you follow this lady, but she makes a lot - if not all - of her clothing (including bras!). and she also makes a lot of stuff for her husband, AND her son, AND her dogs. http://verypurpleperson.com/ she's written quite extensively about how to construct bras and other sewing-related how-to.
